Robert Smithson
"I am for an art that takes into account the direct effect of the elements as they exist from day to day apart from representation."
Smithson (1938 - 1973) was an American sculptor and writer. His land art engaged directly with the environment which we created by moving and building with large amounts of soil and rocks.
Smithson was one of the founders of Land Art and is most well known for his "Spiral Jetty (1970)" which is located in the Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA. The Spiral Jetty worked with Smithson's goal of placing work in the land rather than situated on the land.
In 1964, Smithson emerged with minimalist-like structures that shifted away from the traditional ideas of minimalism. Robert Hobbs stated that "Smithson was not strictly a minimalist. He used the vocabulary of minimalism... clean geometric forms, industrially fabricated parts, the look of objectivity... as a way to point out the weaknesses of systems and networks"
